Verity Morrison is on a mission. She’s going to save her niece Lisbet’s first Season in London from the scandalous clutches of her own sister, Catherine, a woman who ruined Verity’s chances at happiness with Bradford Pemberton, twelve years earlier.

Lisbet is determined to be the Toast of London and falls in a romantic trance with a much older and sinister man. After he proposes, Lisbet then realizes her childhood friend, Charlie Pemberton, is the love of her life. However, some things aren’t that easy and she must soon choose between her father’s word or her and Charlie’s love.

Bradford Pemberton left England in disgrace. He also left behind the only woman he’s ever loved in his life, Verity Morrison. After much correspondence with his nephew Charlie, Bradford returns twelve years later to find the woman who followed family duty over her own heart still loves him as much as he does her.

Janis Susan May has a wonderful and rich knowledge and grasp of the language of historical England. She paints a wondrous picture with fancy dresses, well-tailored men’s dress clothes, and carriage streets. Her villains are unscrupulous and self-serving while her heroes are believable and fun.

The plot swept me away and I found myself intrigued as to what will happen next.

While I found the beginning a little confusing as to why Bradford left and the four main characters seemed to pull me in conflicting directions, I thoroughly enjoyed Second Chance and gave it 4 an a half wings.
